Chemical Rock Breaking

Non-explosive rock fracturing with expansive agents — quiet, controlled and safe where blasting is restricted or simply unwelcome.

Chemical rock breaking is a modern, non-explosive method for fracturing rock in environments where traditional blasting is impractical or restricted. The technique uses expansive demolition agents — non-explosive rock-breaking chemicals — that generate controlled internal pressure to split rock safely, without the shockwaves, vibration or flyrock associated with explosives.

The principle is elegant: a series of precision holes is drilled into the target rock and filled with a high-performance expansive grout. As the compound reacts, it produces immense internal stress that fractures the rock in a predictable, measured way. That makes it particularly effective for projects in built-up areas, near live utilities, heritage sites, or any location where vibration and debris control are critical. Almin Projects delivers this service across the North West Province and South Africa.

The Process, Step by Step

Slower than explosives, but precisely controllable — and that control is exactly the point.

1

Site Assessment & Planning

We evaluate the geological characteristics, project requirements and environmental sensitivities of the site. This determines the number, depth and placement of drill holes, and the correct type and volume of expansive agent.

2

Precision Drilling & Filling

Holes are drilled to a pattern that guides the direction and extent of the break, then filled with non-explosive expansive grout. Placement is everything — and it's where our drilling pedigree shows.

3

Controlled Fracture & Removal

As the agent reacts it expands gradually, cracking the rock apart in a controlled manner with minimal noise, vibration or flyrock. The fractured material is then broken out and removed, leaving a clean, compliant site.

Why Choose Almin for Non-Explosive Breaking

When a project rules out explosives, you still want a contractor who understands rock. That's us:

Built for Sensitive Sites

Urban areas, heritage buildings, hospitals, live plants and utility corridors — environments where one millimetre per second of vibration matters are exactly where this method shines.

Drilling Pedigree = Better Breaks

Expansive agents only work as well as the holes they sit in. Our precision drilling background produces patterns that break rock where you want it broken — first time.

The Same SHEQ Discipline

No explosives doesn't mean no protocols. Every chemical breaking project runs under the same ISO-aligned safety, environmental and quality systems as our blasting operations.

If your site can't take a blast, it can still take Almin. Contact us today to find out whether chemical rock breaking suits your project.
